Tosca Cafe
(North Beach)
The Tosca Cafe can be classed
with the great, original &
historic BEST bars of the world.
Before he died, Rudolph Nureyev
would often be found hanging out
in the back with a variety of
celebrities and friends. Often
called "the casting
couch" because so many film
companies have used it as a film
shoot spot, The Tosca probably
survives its more than 80 year
history because it has kept its
original furnishings. Two large,
antique espresso machines, a long
bar in a narrow front entrance
leads to a back room with
original red vinyl booths, a
vintage jukebox with the original
records and walls that feature
old framed pictures of Marilyn
Monroe and other celebrities and
patrons encompass the dim
atmosphere. Not a cafe, a true
bar, serving a great Irish Coffee
and classic drinks. Next to
Specs, Pearl's Jazz Club and the
Purple Onion across the
street from Vesuvios & City
Lights Books, this is a really
fun place to visit with friends
and lovers on a night out in
North Beach. Dim light. Dress-up
in your favorite retro clothing
and head for Tosca. Men wear
fedora's (Borsalino hats) and
women wear high heels &
nylons & 40's dresses with
padded shoulders. Saturday night
is the best time to find this
scene. Or, to quote Wes Scoop Nisker "If you
don't like history, go out and
make some of your own."
